Pearly White Teeth Whitening

Why should I whiten my teeth?

Most people who get teeth whitening say they do it to boost their self-confidence and to gain the self-esteem that comes from having a great smile. Teeth also turn darker over time, so it makes you have a more youthful smile.

Many of my patients like to come in for teeth whitening before a special occasion, especially when they want to be sure of results. Whether it is for your wedding, graduation, or to pose for a family photograph – you’ll want to be confident in your smile.

Another great time to whiten is after orthodontics. When people get their braces or Invisalign off, sometimes it can be defeating to see different shades on their teeth where the orthodontics once were. I can help make the investment look amazing at the end.

Why should a professional whiten my teeth?

Using commercial or “store bought” teeth whitening products seems simple enough, but if you don’t have the same amount of the whitening agent in close contact with every tooth for the same amount of time, you can end up with uneven whitening. I begin by matching your existing shade to the shade you want to achieve. Then I carefully apply whitening gel to each individual tooth and customize the degree of whitening to meet your desired results. Store bought or salon products usually also provide more sensitivity. The active ingredients can come into contact with tissues inside your mouth, causing irritation. When you come in for teeth whitening, I protect your gums, cheeks, and tongue from damage caused by the active whitening ingredient.

What is the difference between carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide?

The main difference between hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide is that hydrogen peroxide is an effective whitening agent by itself. Hydrogen peroxide works faster and usually shows longer term results. To have effects with carbamide peroxide, it has to have a percentage of hydrogen peroxide in it. I always encourage clients to ask what type or peroxide is being used and what is the percentage. Anything under 10% HP or 38% carbamide peroxide is considered a “take home” product.

Will it work if I have artificial dentition (crowns, veneers, filling material, etc.)?

No teeth whitening product will whiten artificial dentition. I can always help if your natural teeth need to whiten to match your crowns or veneers. It is ALWAYS a good idea to whiten your teeth prior to getting any cosmetic work done so that the dentist will match the new restorations to the natural whitened teeth.
